The Kuju Mountain Range is the most popular in Kyushu, offering a different experience in each season. Spring's Miyama-kirishima azalea and autumn's colorful foliage draw hikers from across Japan. We tailor the best course for you according to the season, weather, physical fitness, and interests. The mountain lodge "Hokkein Sanso," with its hot spring, is a popular base for hikers. The most popular trailhead, Makinoto, is about 20 minutes from Kurokawa Onsen or 1 hour from Aso. The hike duration varies, with the shortest taking 3 hours and the longest being a full-day trek.


Mountain Details


① Mt. Ohgigahana 1,746m (Beginner to Intermediate)

Mount Ohgigahana is known for its sweeping views of the surrounding Kuju Mountain Range and its diverse alpine flora. The trail leading to the summit is relatively gentle, making it accessible for most hikers. From the top, you can enjoy panoramic views, especially beautiful during the azalea bloom in spring and the autumn foliage season. The hike typically takes 3-4 hours round trip.


② Mt. Kuju 1,787m (Intermediate)

Mt. Kuju, the highest peak in Kyushu, offers a more challenging trek with rewarding views of volcanic landscapes and lush forests. The trail can be steep and rocky in places, but the summit rewards hikers with 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. This hike can take anywhere from 5 to 8 hours, depending on the chosen route and pace.

③ Mt. Nakadake 1,791m (Intermediate)

Mt. Nakadake, part of the Kuju Mountain Range, is another popular destination for experienced hikers. The trail is known for its rugged terrain and volcanic features, including fumaroles and hot springs along the way. The summit offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks and the Kuju plateau. This trek is more demanding and usually takes 7-8 hours.


④ Mt. Tengugajo 1,766m (Intermediate)

Mt. Tengugajo is a prominent peak within the Kuju range, known for its rocky outcrops and challenging climbs. The trail is steep and requires a good level of fitness, but the views from the top are spectacular, with clear days offering vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. The hike generally takes 7-8 hours, making it ideal for those looking for a full-day adventure.


⑤ Mt. Hiijidake 1,643m (Intermediate)

Mount Hiijidake is a less crowded but equally rewarding hike within the Kuju Mountains. The trail is moderately difficult, featuring a mix of forested paths and rocky terrain. At the summit, hikers are treated to beautiful views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, with the area being particularly lovely in autumn when the leaves change color. This hike usually takes about 5-6 hours.


⑥ Mt. Taisen 1,786m (Intermediate)

Mt. Taisen is a hidden gem in the Kuju range, offering a peaceful hike through serene forests and meadows. The trail is less demanding, making it a good option for those looking for a more relaxed trek while still enjoying the stunning natural beauty of the region.
