Mountain Details
① Mt. Takadake 1,592m & Mt. Nakadake 1,506m (Intermediate)
This is a recommended course where you can enjoy wonderful volcanic scenery. From the volcanic desert “Sunasenrigahama,” climb up the volcanic rock slope to reach the ridge, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the seven craters and the caldera. The dynamic scenery of the Aso Caldera and volcanoes will be a wonderful memory of your trip to Kyushu. It is possible to make a day trip from Kumamoto City, but it is also a good idea to stay at an inn in Aso (Uchimaki Onsen and more), to fully enjoy Aso area. The time required is 4-5 hours (depending on the person as it is a steep slope with an elevation difference of 240m).
② Mt. Kishimadake 1,270m (Beginner)
Mt. Kishimadake has a crater at its summit, and circling around the crater, you can see the north caldera basin of Aso from a very good view. The trail is paved, so it is also an easy mountain to climb even for children and those with foot problems. Many tourists climb this mountain because of its scenic beauty and ease of ascent. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
③ Mt. Eboshidake 1,337m (Beginner)
Mt. Eboshidake offers a panoramic view of the southern caldera basin of Aso. The summit of this mountain is not wide, but you can enjoy a different view from that of Mount Kishima, including a close-up view of Tateno Gorge. This is an unpaved dirt trail that can be a bit slippery, and at the end of May, the mountainsides are covered in the pink color of Miyama-kirishima, making it a very popular mountain for Japanese hikers. The hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
④ Men-no-Ishi Cat Cave (Beginner to Intermediate)
This unique spot features a cave that resembles a cat's face. It is a relatively short and easy hike, taking about 1 hour, and is a great destination for families and those looking for a leisurely exploration. Additionally, there are naturally formed wind caves, and a round-trip course that visits two of these wind caves from the Cat Cave takes about 3 to 4 hours.
Details of Hiking Spots
① Furubouchu (From Mt. Kijimadake Foot to Nakadake Crater)
Although no one resides on Mt. Aso today, Furubouchu is a historic area where 88 temples once stood, serving as a site for ascetic practices by many priests and monks. The trail traverses Furubouchu and leads to Nakadake Crater. This route features minimal elevation changes, making it accessible even for those who are less confident in their physical strength. The hike, which passes through the smoking crater, provides a stimulating experience and takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete. For convenience, you can take a bus back to the starting point.
② Kusasenri Grassland
The Kusasenri Grassland is a 1-km diameter crater that erupted 28,000 years ago and has since become a picturesque grassland popular among tourists. It offers numerous photogenic spots and allows visitors to enjoy a leisurely walk through its scenic landscape. The exploration of Kusasenri Grassland typically takes about an hour.
